How to Lose Weight When the Odds Are Stacked Against You

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife

I have experienced the double whammy of weight gain – quitting smoking and entering full-blown menopause. Now, while just ‘eating less and moving more’ or ‘mindful eating’ might have worked when I was younger, at a certain age, losing weight gets harder and harder. I  needed to do something more than simply count calories. In the… Read More

by KatieP, in category Heart | Dating

Phew! You can breathe a sigh of relief — you have made it through a bad breakup or divorce and you are ready to face the world again. You put your profile up on an online dating site and wait for the invitations to roll in. But things are not as you imagined. The men… Read More

Why I’m handing back my Midlife membership card

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife

In a few days I will turn 51. It is not a momentous birthday like my last one (and I’m not in KL to celebrate it sadly), but I have come to a significant understanding — I am not cut out to be a Midlife Lady — at least not the type I sometimes encounter online. Here… Read More

7 Things No One Tells You About Your Fifties

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife
Midlife isn't a downward spiral to the grave, it's a time of freedom and awakening.

The only thing more talked about on women’s blogs than children is The Change. Somewhere around your fifties, you stop having your period and start having things that they call Symptoms. These are physical and psychological changes that seem to have the power to wreck lives and signal the start of a downward spiral into… Read More

A Woman’s Essence • Replanting Trees

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife

Women are like trees. As they grow in years they also grow in their power to provide shelter and to live in full bloom. Some people don’t like trees. Trees strike them as messy — they sway and grow chaotically against the perpendicular lines of houses and fences. Some people want to cut down trees, make them quiet, and make… Read More

V is for Vision • #atozchallenge

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife

I’ve often wondered if all the hours I spent reading under the blankets with a torch when I was a kid contributed to my bad eyesight. I’m short sighted – I can’t see anything more than a few centimetres in front on my nose. Too vain to wear glasses, I have worn contact lenses since… Read More

A Wandering Eye

by KatieP, in category Health | Sexuality

My boyfriend has a wandering eye. When a young girl walks down to the sea in her skimpy bikini, his gaze rests on her firm, lithe, unwrinkled body. I’m going to be fifty on my next birthday, my body is curvy and soft, I have stretch marks and cellulite — I have every reason to be jealous.

menopause

My period has disappeared again. It happened once before for three months and then it came back. I know it isn’t coming back any time soon because my boobs aren’t sore (PMT). But it seems that the price of smaller, happier breasts is the dreaded hot flushes. It is hard to explain how weird a… Read More

The Gap

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife
sunflower

There is a gap between what I wish was true, and what actually is. And as much as I wish it was otherwise, there is nothing I can do to effortlessly transform into a natural size eight.

Connection to Me

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife

What amazes me is this connection with my body. When I was dieting, I tried so hard to ignore the biological impulse of hunger that I blocked everything else out.

The Afternoon

by KatieP, in category Health | Midlife
the afternoon - creating our future selves

As I get older I worry that my productive, vital years are behind me. Perhaps I only have ten more years before my body and my mind breaks down.

Author – Katie Paul

I have survived adoption, bulimia and the suicide of my husband, more or less unscathed. I attribute my resilience to my guardian angels Bob, Fred and Hugo.

I used to be a stage manager but gave it all up to create beautiful images and to write about loss, love, lust and longing. I get a bit raunchy at times because that’s the way life should be – full of big juicy moments. I'm sure Bob, Fred and Hugo agree.
