Fill Me Up : a feminine perspective on spiritual practice

It is no secret I struggle to meditate. I’ve tried to establish a practice over and over again and still I don’t enjoy sitting and emptying my mind. It doesn’t bring me any joy or clarity — it just bores or frustrates me.

I remember David Deida saying that masculine and feminine energies require different spiritual practices. A man’s (or someone with a masculine energy) greatest desire is to be emptied out and a woman’s (or someone with a feminine energy) greatest desire is to be filled up. When I think about the choice between empty or full, I gravitate towards wanting to be filled to overflowing.

Writing empties me out. After a while I need to rest and recharge so I have more to give. Meditating makes me feel even emptier. It is not what I need.

Today I decided to read a spiritual book for ten minutes instead of meditating. I pulled Conversations with God down from the bookshelf. Half and hour later, I was still reading, my eyes spilling tears of joy.

This is my spiritual practice for today — filling up my soul with fresh ideas, loving encouragement and spiritual nourishment. I’m opening my heart to the Universe so I can be filled with love, inspiration and joy.

Now that feels much better than counting my breath for ten minutes.

Fill me up so I have more love to pour out into the world.
