What do I want to tell you?

by KatieP on September 13, 2011

free womanI’ve struggled with my non-fiction book project because I don’t want it to be another misery memoir – you know the type … how I overcome all sorts of tragedy and emerge relatively unscathed and the reader either feels depressed, inspired or bored.

The thing is that bad things happen to everyone and everyone deals with it in their own way. My story is not really about overcoming the obstacles of disordered eating, suicide and a whopping mid-life crisis. Those are just the things that happened to me.

So now I know what it’s NOT, what is it? What is it that I want to tell you, that you might need to hear from someone like me?

What I want my book to be about, and what I really want you to know is that it’s OK to be different from what your parents, society, the church, and the media tell you.

It’s OK to be curvy instead of thin.

It’s OK to be single instead of married.

It’s OK to be childless instead of a mother.

It’s OK to identify yourself as a sexual goddess instead of a ‘good girl’.

It’s OK to give away love, sex and intimacy without expecting anything in return.

It’s OK to make mistakes, to be less than perfect, to not always be strong.

It’s OK to be too much.

And it’s OK to use your voice to speak, to whisper, to cry, to sing, to moan and to shout. You need to be heard or you will die.

In the true spirit of procrastination, I fiddled with my blog today to reflect the way I’m feeling about celebrating my sexuality and using my voice. If you’re in a reader or email then click on over to check it out.

It’s so wonderful to have a voice, isn’t it? And to be child-free by choice. And to claim the power that’s been ours all along, even though we didn’t realize it. And yes, to be too much.

First off…love the look celebrating sexuality; gorgeous!
Secondly, your timing is impeccable; I needed to hear how ok it is to be different and that it’s alright if I’m too much because that’s how I like to live and I’m tired of toning it “down” to accommodate what others want me to be; THANK YOU Katie! And yes, I do make mistakes and beat myself up about them constantly; but you know what…it’s ok to make mistakes too. Awesome post and new look!!

Thanks Chairmaine
Mistakes are wonderful … it means you’re taking a risk and learning as you go along. Keep being you x
